SRD264 ARCHITECTURE DESIGN 2B
PROJECT 1 MINIMA
MICHAEL RAFFERTY 800418919
The project was launched through the trialing of space and requirement. Feuding ideas of shared space for different tasks against separate space for each task, I was able to devise a preference for a functional outcome to reflect my own personal needs. This process of full spectrum analysis was continued until a suitable outcome had been refined over the allocated time period of Minima.
The final design shows what has been labeled Totem, reflecting the clusters of totem poles seen in indigenous culture. The building becomes ones own structure of symbolism. By building up, I was able to limit the footprint of the building, utilising space that is normally unoccupied. Through a modular layout, it would be seen that the buildings internals could be tailored to the occupants needs, allowing a cavalcade of dwellings to flourish through the Deakin University grounds.
The main proponent of the design is the inclusion of a full height cavity that allows the storage of a thin upright modular tank, along with solar and waste removal services. Water is taken from an inverted pitch drain behind parapet, overlooked by dual Photovoltaic panels.Upon removal grey water and other waste is transported downward into relevant storing tanks in the buildings podium.
The interior layout consists of (ground) entryway extending to kitchen with enclosed shower/toilet, connected by permanent ladder to (first) open plan sleeping and study space.
The building has been designed around a steel frame, clad externally in shiplap timber on insulation, fitted around full height double glazing. Lattice work covers some sections of the building along the three sides to allow for a vertical garden, giving back to the courtyard from which it takes.
The sectional model included in submission has been removed of its South facade, showing the cavity wall and podium area, while also giving a clear indication of interior spaces.
