Domus Layout Banner

Due to technical difficulties this Banner could not be uploaded- further attempts will be made in the future.

Tested and Refined-Battersea 6

Domus Tested and Refined!!!

Domus has now been tested and Refined and is in its final stages of presentation layout.
Key elements that were tested were as follows

- Ventilation via Fluid Mapping- found to be more then satisfactory- no changes made.
- Shading- tested via shadow diagrams... needed more- eves were extended
- Water catchment- potential for more... extended eves catered for this
- Water system-refined by way of use of Grey water storage onto garden- also redesign of guttering to make water a feature of the overall design.
- Permercutlure- more indepth look at food sources and places suitable to grow various food varieties
- Site plan and layout, look at how Domus responds to site and how Gardern area reacts with natural surrounding's.
- Materiality- look at EE of materials, what needs to be brought onto site.

All in all we aimed to make our presentation: clear, concise and simple to best illustrate the small changes to the Domus design.

Domus Test & Refine Fluid Mapping

For the re-design of our Domus, we looked closely at Fluid Mapping to predict ventilation paths through the private rooms of our design. The winds from the south east penetrate through the private rooms and into the central courtyard when all windows and doors are open

Solar Panel Calculator

So as a part of our groups test & refine we wanted to know exactly how many PV panels we would require and what size to power the minimal amount of appliances in our house. This website is great for overall solar technologies, however they have a nice program on there which does a whole lot of calculations for you. The link to the page brings you straight to the 'build a system' page. Just follow the instructions and it shouldn't be too hard for most. The cool thing is that using the google map you can type in kakadu and it will use values from the near Jabiru waether station for climate data.
Anyway thought id share the useful tool.

DOMUS KAKADU - Roof Study

The following pictures are somewhat an attempt to chronicle the development of the roof for our Kakadu house. The first pictures illustrate an attempt to understand the geometry of the roof (white card at 1:100) the following a final model of the roof, built on very rough 'formwork' of sorts...

Re-Capping on Tri 2 2009 Design

re-capping on Trimester 2 2009 Design!!

Our group has successfully put together well thought out, and articulated response to the Domus brief for part one of the Domus design. Key aspects addressed were in direct response to the climate in terms of heat, shading, ventilation, comfort and EE as well as easy of constructibility.

I thoughroughly enjoyed working on Domus and want to say a huge thankyou for my entire group dedication, team work, understanding and help. I felt everyone worked well together, all differences of opinions were constructive and kept the over all design in mind, everyone made allowances and took on bored all ideas that were put on the table.

All in all, I was personally more then happy with the end result of our projects this semester and am proud of the work that was put in to get us there.

Battersea 7 - domus fianl pres. sheets

For our proposal we decided to spread our drawings over four panels. Two panels were on A2 and two were on A1.
The first panel shows our design development through the sketching of ideas. In the review it was brought to our attention that perhaps a better way of showing the development process would have been by using the 'thumbnail' approach with smaller sketches down the sides of all the panels over the presentation, linking certain elements together and showing were initial ideas stemmed from.

The second of our panels shows the floor plan and site plans. due to the size of our building needing to accommodate at any one time up to 12 guests, we were only able to fit the floor plan at a legible and clear scale at an angle on a A1 sheet. The floor plan itself shows how we stuck with the idea of having a central living core to separate the private spaces of both the guests and permanent residents. The contours of the site also indicate that we had placed our building on a decent slope rather than pure flat site to take advantage of aspects that a slope site has opposed to a totally flat one which are shown in the sections.

The section are also on a A1 panel due to their need to be visible from afar and detailed. The sections help show how ventilation plays a large part in our building. The section in the middle to the right indicates how we will use cool air flow from beneath the building to push hot air out and reduce the stagnant air that humidity brings. We have also used the system of having a smaller opening towards the back of the building which prevailing winds will hit, that willl travel below the building to a larger opening creating a natural reverse vaccum.
The final panel on an A2 sheet shows our proposed building in digtially rendered form. Our previous posts have spoken about materiality but to reiterate, the main materials used are timber battns along the 'wings' and a colrobond sheeting wrapped around the 'core'.
It was mentioned to us in the review that perhaps this last panel may have been more useful with fewer images or at least creating a more focused heirarchy with the images used.
We are now moving onto the test and refine stage of the domus building and have already come across multiple changes to make our building better.

DOMUS 3D Development Pt.3 - Battersea 7

This is a sample of the Final Renders used for our Domus Presentation.
The 3D Model was created using ArchiCAD then imported into Artlantis which was used to create the renders.

Domus

Our design for the residence in Kakadu started off with a story and a thumnail., it Started off with the dream time beliefs of native tribes, about a woman who sculpted the lands and created life will her dilly bag and walking stick.

the first layout of design was put forth and the group studied passive cooling techniques which would prove useful in later designs. We found that cross ventilation and protection from the sun using double skinned walls/rooms would prove most useful

a new design layout which better suited human interaction was chosen. it involved an internal courtyard to give the residents a focal point in the house providing nice views and an enclosed external environment providing protection from the sun. This is then surrounded by the bedrooms which each have their own private deck as a place to retreat when one wants privacy and a communual kitchen and living room.

These following sketches were from our Domus progression. We have used aboriginal art stories & the surrounding context as design drive for this project which we believe we reflected fairly well.
